GNRA Team one was declared the overall winner of the Guyana National Rifle Association 2008 Queensway Cup handgun shoot, which was staged at the Timehri ranges last Sunday.
Following in the second spot were GNRA Team two, while Police Team one finished third. Special was made of the GDF team who put in a commendable performance to bring fourth overall.
The competition got off in the typical Timehri weather consisting of blazing sunshine mixed with periods of heavy downpours, with eight teams comprising of 24 shooters overall.
Organisations represented included the Guyana Defence Force, Guyana Police Force, Guyana National Rifle Association, Bank of Guyana Security, Beharry Security and COPS Security.
The shoot was done in three stages and at three different ranges starting with the 5 metre range shoot, followed by the 10 metre and then the 15 metre range, all under time restriction.
At the 5 metre range, most of the teams were in excellent form and this stage was won by the GNRA Team one of Joseph Chin, Lavendra Luckiram and Johan Da Silva. They shot a perfect score of 150 points out of a possible 150.
They were followed closely by the Police Team one comprising of Patrick Todd, Lansdale Withrite and Guy Nurse in second place with a score of 149 and the GNRA Team two comprising of Aundrea Cambridge, Gordon Richard and Ryan McKinnon in third with 145 points.
Moving to the 10 metre range where competitors had two targets to shoot on and a mandatory magazine change, the points difference between the teams opened up and GNRA Team one again took top honours in this stage with a total of 286 points out of a possible 300, followed by Police Team one with 267 points and the GDF team comprising of Colonel A. Hartley, Major Terry Stuart and Lieutenant Sooklall in third place with 261 points.
For the final stage shot at the 15 metre range, competitors had a 5 metre dash from the 20 metre line to the 15 metre where they had to load two magazines of ten rounds each and engage their target in the kneeling position followed by a magazine change and engagement in the prone (laying down) position all under time restriction.
GNRA Team one again was in the top position with 265 points out of a possible 300 followed by GNRA Team two with 249 points and the GDF team with 221 points.
Many competitors lost points due as they buckled under the pressure of shooting “under the clock”, simply running out of time.
The Guyana Police Force fielded the best individual overall shooter of the competition in Inspector Patrick Todd, who was in outstanding form, finishing ahead of Lavendra Luckiram and Johan Da Silva of the GNRA in second and third place respectively.
There was also a surprise falling plate shoot held for the participants where competitors had to engage five poppers in the fastest possible time starting from a holstered firearm at 15 metres.
This shoot was an all GNRA affair as all three top places were claimed by the GNRA shooters with Aundrea Cambridge emerging as winner followed by Ryan McKinnon and David Dharry in second and third place respectively. Kudos were in order for the new generation of GNRA shooters for an excellent performance.
Chief Range Officer (CRO) Murtland Smith, assisted by Handgun Captain Dale Hing, Mohamed Qualander and David Dharry were the officials handling the proceedings.
The lovely Samantha Chung assisted in presenting the trophies and medals to the outstanding performers.
The Queensway Cup is an annual event sponsored by Queensway and is intended as an event to bring together persons and organisations especially from the security sector and to promote the sport of handgun shooting in Guyana.
