Local squash player Kristian Jeffrey exhibited grit and determination to outplay
Kevin Bailey (OECS) 9-3, 9-2, 9-5 when the 2008 Cellink Southern Caribbean Squash championships got underway at the Georgetown Club, Camp Street, yesterday.
Regan Pollard emulated Jeffrey’s feat with a convincing victory over Rhett Cumberbatch (Barbados), 9-3, 9-4, 9-7. Chalking up another win for Guyana was Alexander Arjoon over his countryman R. McDavid 9-4, 10-9, 9-4.
It was not all smooth sailing for Guyana as Ryan Abraham (TT) got the better of Guyanese Raphael DeGroot, 9-0, 9-3, 9-4 and Mark Sealey (Barbados) defeated Guyanese Joshua Abdool 9-0, 9-1, 9-0.
In the other results; James Bentick defeated Trinidadian P. Pirtheesingh 9-2, 9-0, 9-1, S. Simpson defeated A. Lopez 9-1, 9-7, 9-3, Josh Pinard (TT) outplayed Venezuelan J. Sanchez 9-5, 9-2, 9-0, Shane Slater (St Vincent) won from Kevin Hannaway (OECS) 9-3, 9-2, 9-2, D. Becerra (Venezuela) was awarded a walkover against Nicholas
Narain (Guy). Barbadian B. Cumberbatch defeated Guyanese Deje Dias 9-2, 9-1, 9-3, F. Valecillo (Venezuela) defeated Guyanese Brendon Mounter 9-0, 9-5, 9-0.
J. Rothie (Venezuela) defeated Kale Wilson 9-2, 9-1, 9-2, Trinidadian Colin Ramasra won over his countryman Julian Henry 9-1, 9-3, 9-0.
In the women’s category; Guyana’s Nicolette Fernandes and Barbadian Karen Meakins earned byes, while Guyanese Mary Fung-A-Fat beat countrywoman Tiffany Solomon 9-7, 9-4, 9-7.
Bajan Nadia McCathy defeated Guyana’s Alysa Xavier 9-2, 9-3, 9-1, while Ashley DeGroot (Guy) beat C. Parris (Bar) 9-0, 9-1, 9-0, Lilliana White defeated Lydia Fraser 9-1, 9-0, 9-0. Carla Jackson (Bar) won over Victoria Arjoon (Guy) 1-9, 9-1, 9-5, 9-4, while Kayla Jeffrey lost to twin sister Keisha Jeffrey 5-9, 9-5, 9-1, 9-4.
The tournament continues today at the same venue with morning and evening sessions starting from 9:00am and 5:30pm respectively.
