Host DCC defeated GCC by 11 runs yesterday in a rain-hit Neal and Massy 40-overs first division cricket clash which was reduced to 24 overs to clinch their sixth consecutive victory in the competition.
Former National under-15 player Delon Fernandes grabbed 3-17 from five overs while Gavin Singh who opened the bowling with his off-spin and took 2-12 as DCC, kept on a tight leash on a slow track and heavy outfield, fell for 89 in 23.2 overs. Skipper Jamal Hinkson top scored with 18.
The inexperienced GCC line-up then never appeared to have a game plan when they batted and were restricted to 78-9 after needing 16 from the last two overs and 14 from the last six balls.
Off-spinner Denis Squires who bowled the penultimate over and conceded just two runs, had 2-8 from five overs while talented Guyana 20/20 all-rounder Chris Barnwell, who bowled the final over, captured 3-11 from five overs. National under-19 opener Trevon Griffith showed promising all-round ability with 2-14 with his off-spin and held a brilliant return catch to remove Ravi Sarwan for four.
National under-19 batsman Jeetendra Sookdeo made a patient 31 but nobody else reached 20 for a GCC side which struggled to find gaps and accelerate when required on a track which kept very low.
Denver Greaves who had two stumpings, including one off the medium pace of Barnwell to get rid of Trevor Henry (5), finished unbeaten on 16 and added 25 with Lawrence Smith (9) for the ninth wicket to gave the DCC total some respectability after Hinkson and Troy Nurse (13) had put together 24 for the fourth wicket before Nurse was sent packing by Fernandes.
DCC were in early trouble after they were sent in to bat on a track with lots of moisture when Barnwell (4) and Griffith (6) fell in quick succession to leave the host on 10-2.
Their total eventually proved adequate as the immaturity of the batting display from a GCC team packed with several youth players, emphasised the low quality of first division cricket presently in Guyana.
