Ace Warriors, led by a century from Rawle Enmore, Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) and Transport Sports Club (TSC) were among the first round winners in the Georgetown Cricket Association’s Beharry Cup second division 40-overs cricket competition over the weekend.
Played in sweltering heat at the DCC ground, the hosts avenged their defeat in the last year’s GCA second division final against Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) by winning by three wickets, while GCC whipped Everest by 87 runs at Bourda.
Former National under-19 player Danny Narayan stroked a responsible 64 and shared in a half-century partnership with Randy Lindore (26) before MSC slipped from 92-2 to 127 all out in 32.1 overs.
DCC then reached 128-7 in 23 overs to take 10 points for the victory plus seven bonus points from their opening game.
Off-spinner Denis Squires had 2-18 from eight tight overs and got support from Edward Burnett who bowled skipper Shemroy Barrington with the first ball of the match to finish with 2-21. Leg-spinner Kester Harcourt (2-9) and the consistent 18-year-old all-rounder Matthew Marques (2-28) also supported well for DCC.
After former Guyana under-15 pacer Seon Daniels struck in the first over, the national undedr-19 pair of left-hander Trevon Griffith (16) and Royston Alkins (17) posted the DCC 50 in eight overs before Alkins was bowled by part time off-spinner Barrington.
Former Berbice off-spinner Sean Devers then bowled the potentially dangerous Squires (1) with his first ball but his 2-13 from eight overs and a late burst from Daniels who finished with 3-47 from six overs, failed to prevent DCC from marching to victory.
Skipper Linden Lyght who stroked two fours and a six in a busy 23 and a sensible 15 from Turks and Cacaos’ 20/20 wicketkeeper batsman Donavan Matthews, who is home on holiday, saw their team home. MSC collected five bonus points from the game.
At Bourda, Gavin Singh (50) and Ravi Sarwan the former national under-15 player and brother of West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan, who made 47, saw GCC to 179 all out off 38 overs.
Former Guyana under-15 player Delon Fernandes (3-17) and Singh (1-10 from seven overs) then ensured Everest fell for 92.
GCC collected 10 points for the victory and nine bonus points while Everest had to settle for five bonus points.
At GYO on Saturday, Enmore blasted seven sixes and six fours in a pugnacious 126 as Ace Warriors piled up 316-6 off 40 overs against Diplomats who fell for 114.
Ace Warriors collected 10 points for the victory, nine batting points and five bowling points to take an early lead in the competition with 24 points while Diplomats had to settle for five points.
In the lone game played yesterday, TSC beat host GYO by 95 runs after making 226-7 and restricting GYO to 129-9 in a game reduced to 27 overs due to rain.
Stephen Alves made 66 and got support from Markus Watkins (32) and Leon D’Aguiar (22*) as Orle Dawson took 2-33 and former Demerara under-15 off-spinner Ricardo Devers 2-45 for GYO.
Sixteen-year-old Alex Ramalho made 37 and national under-17 left-arm pacer Andre Stoll 28 in a losing effort for GYO as off-spinner Kevin Ross (4-18) and Carl Hiliman (3-29) did the damage. TSC collected 19 points while GYO got five.
Yesterday’s clash between GNIC and Third Class was rained out.
A bonus point is awarded to each team that make 100 runs while another bonus is received for every 25 runs after 100 while every two wickets taken by a team also gives them a bonus point.
