— THAG to help enhance cemetery
The contentious mortuary and holding room, which comes under the control of City Hall, may soon be placed in the hands of a private operator if ongoing discussions on the matter prove successful.
This is the report of Deputy Mayor Robert Williams, who revealed that efforts are being made to finalise talks to have the facilities leased in the very near future.
For some time now, the operations of the facilities have been ineffective, since the municipality has been unable to finance necessary rehabilitation work.
But, according to Williams, an investor has indicated his desire to invest in excess of $10M in two years to renovate the mortuary, to repair the cold storage facility, and operate them , even as a place for relatives to hold services for their departed loved ones is constructed.
In addition, he said, the municipality is continuing to look at ways and means of finding interested persons who are willing to join forces with the council to engage in the maintenance and development of the cemetery.
According to Mayor Hamilton Green, the finances of the council are so depleted that it can ill-afford to even fence the cemetery as part of Carifesta preparations.
However, Williams disclosed that a non-governmental organisation has offered to render assistance to the council in this regard.
He said that the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana, through international partners, has signalled its intent to work along with the municipality towards enhancing the cemetery.
In the meantime, the Deputy Mayor said, as part of the ongoing preparation for Carifesta X, the municipality has streamlined some works at the facility.
He said that a team of cleaning workers, comprising Drainage and Irrigation workers who have been selected by the Ministry of Public Works and others from the City Council, will be involved in enhancing the road through the cemetery as well as the shoulders of the cemetery.
Further enhancement work in the city is also ongoing through the municipality’s collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development.
Local Government Minister Kellawan Lall recently met with City officials at City Hall, where plans were outlined as to how preparations for Carifesta will be completed before the commencement of the grand event on Friday.
Government recently boosted the financial capacity of the municipality with $15 M.
At that forum, Mayor Green revealed that the council is committed to ensuring that everything possible is done to transform the city to an acceptable state for Carifesta X.
