Some residents of Albouystown say they are living in an unhealthy environment.
Last Friday, the people who live along a section of James Street, Albouystown complained that they were almost suffocated by the stench of that community.
At the head of the road, opposite the La Penitence Market, there are two huge piles of garbage that threaten both the vendors and their customers.
The residents of James Street say that there are many food businesses operating in that area.
The owner of a grocery store in James Street says that he is affected by the insanitary surroundings.
He also said that his customers complain about his environment every day, and he believes that they will be forced not to return one day.
Another business owner told Kaieteur News that he witnessed many people from around their neighbourhood dumping garbage and animal remains at the head of the road.
A customer who was at the grocery store at that time said she is disappointed that the Government ordered the vendors in the market to paint their stalls and tidy their surroundings for Carifesta X, 2008, while their view of James Street is terrible.
An elderly woman who sells newspapers just beyond the dump is also complaining that she is not well but has to depend on the wind direction for some comfort.
Apart from the garbage, the residents told Kaieteur News that they are also experiencing problems with the sewerage in the neighbourhood. Leaks in the system send faecal matter into the yards.
A mother of five said that she fears for her infant and her elderly mother’s health.
The residents say that two manholes may be responsible for the condition.
Another resident says that, after using her bathroom, it suddenly floods with sewage, while another says that after using hers, her entire compound floods.
Kaieteur news spoke to some of the residents, who said that several reports have been made to both the Guyana Water Inc (GWI) and the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) concerning their community; but while they received no positive response from the Council, they were promised a visit from GWI.
