Jason Benn promoted to Kent’s 2nd X1
By Sean Devers
Malteenoes Sports Club fast bowling all-rounder Jeremiah Harris says his first stint in English league cricket is a learning experience.
The former Guyana under-19 pacer recently picked up his first five-wicket haul to follow up two half-centuries with the bat and says he is hoping to return in time for the Inter-County tournament which is scheduled for early September.
“I was told that the Inter-County competition starts in the first week next month and while I don’t know the exact dates for the trails I will be sending a letter to the Demerara Cricket Board letting them know that I want to be available for the inter-county series,” the 24-year-old Harris told Kaieteur Sports in an exclusive interview.
Harris, who last played at the regional youth level in 2002, informed that it was raining in England and explained that at this time of the year the pitches are slower than even those in Guyana because of the moisture.
Harris, who bats at number five in the order for his English Club Watton-at-Stone and also plays for college side Hackeny College along with Guyanese Antonell Atwell, said he is doing a lot of running to keep fit and feels his cricket has already improved since his arrival in the United Kingdom.
Harris’ best bowling is 5-42 against Harpenden and he has also taken four three-wicket hauls as he adjusts to bowling on the soft English tracks.
The right-arm pacer, who bats left-handed, has been receiving tremendous physiological support from his wife Keisha who is here in Guyana.
Apart from his unbeaten 56 and 53 against North Hampton, Harris scored an unbeaten 26 and his last three innings yielded scores of 41, 31 and 20.
At 24, Harris’ ambition is to represent his country and he intends to do well with both bat and ball when he returns home.
Meanwhile, GCC fast bowler Jason Benn has been having a good season in the Kent Division League, the league in which new West Indies player Leon Johnson played last year.
“I’m playing for Bexley Cricket Club and I’m the current leading wicket taker in all the leagues in Kent with 35 wickets at an average of 12.66 from 12 matches. This has helped my club to be second in the league, nine points behind the leaders,” the talented Benn told this newspaper from England yesterday.
“My best performances have been 7 for 50, 6 for 36 and three four wicket hauls. My performances have aided me to be selected to play for Kent 2nd XI against Hampshire where I picked up 2 for 34 from seven overs in a game which Kent won. Since then I’ve been invited to training sessions with the county and I’ve continued to bowl well,” the former GCC Skipper informed.
”It’s been a decent standard of cricket and I’m very pleased with my performances. Hopefully when I return in early September, I can work towards representing Demerara and take it from there,” he added.
