– inmate charged with massacres questioned
Police took an ex-prisoner into custody yesterday as the probe intensified into Friday’s discovery of a .38 revolver and eight matching rounds of ammunition in the Camp Street jail.
An official said that the man, who was recently placed on bail for armed robbery, was arrested at his home in East La Penitence. He was subsequently detained at the Brickdam Police Station.
Investigators say that they have received information that suggests that the former prisoner was involved in the smuggling of the firearm into the penitentiary.
According to a source, the investigators have also been informed that, before his release from prison, the former inmate was among a group of prisoners who were planning a jailbreak.
Meanwhile, former army lieutenant Oliver Hinckson and three other inmates were taken back to the Georgetown Prisons yesterday under tight security, after being detained at CID Headquarters.
Hinckson, who is incarcerated on charges of sedition and possession of arms and ammunition, was among those who were detained after the weapon was found.
Kaieteur News has since confirmed that a prisoner who has been charged in connection with the massacres at Lusignan and Bartica was among the inmates whom police had interrogated. It is unclear why the four inmates were singled out for questioning, since the firearm was not found in any of their cells.
An official said that, at around 16:00 hrs on Friday, prison staff nabbed an inmate who was heading to the Tailor Shop Division with a 38 revolver, eight rounds of ammunition and a quantity of marijuana. It is believed that someone threw the firearm and marijuana over the prison wall.
Prison officials contacted the police and an intensive search of the prisons was conducted, during which ten cell phones and several sharpened implements were found.
Police officials had hinted some months ago that they had received information that some high-profile inmates were planning a jailbreak.
Hinckson, 64, of Meadow Brook Gardens, was charged on March 11 with sedition and advocating the commission of terrorist acts.
The charges stem from alleged statements he made at a City Hall public forum.
The former army lieutenant, along with former army lieutenant James Gibson, was also previously charged for possession of arms and ammunition.
