After a one week break the Pouderoyen Inter-Block football competition returned with a bang at the West Demerara Secondary School ground Thursday with a Neville Stanton hat-trick highlighting this latest round.
Stanton powered Showtime ‘A’ to a 5-0 drubbing of Bella Dam with his strikes in the 15th, 19th and 26th minutes, while help came from Cleveland Walcott (14) and Lawrence Barrington (29) who completed the tally.
Steve Felix (7) and Dellon Layne (16) saw Canal to a 2-0 triumph over Phoenix Park.
Showtime ‘B’ got the better of Wales United 3-1 with Sherwin Vincent (14), Wendell St Hill with a double in the 22nd and 29th minutes completing their tally, while Randy McFarlane (11) had opened for Wales.
Middle Street edged Crane by the odd goal in three. Ryan Paul (9) and Osden Jones (20) accounted for the winners goals, while Ren Gentle (2) opened for Crane. Stewartville and Beavers were locked in a 2-2 stalemate.
Dwayne Charles (21) and Owen McGarrell (29) levelled the tie for Stewartville after M. Castello (14) and T. Martin (19) had put Beavers ahead.
West Side Stars halted Samaroo Dam 2-0 in the night’s final encounter. Derrick Vyphuis with a double in the 2nd and 14th minutes saw his side to victory.
The tournament continues tonight with another six games at the West Demerara Secondary School ground from 6:00pm.
Rovers play Jetty, Reggae Boys versus Coglan Dam, West Side Stars come up against Bella Dam, Canal #1 challenge Showtime ‘B’, Phoenix challenge Depot Dam and Showtime ‘A’ face Samaroo Dam in the last set of preliminary round games. The knockout stage of the tournament will commence in earnest tomorrow at the same venue.
The team winning the competition, organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports through their grass roots football programme, the brainchild of Parliamentary Secretary Steve Ninvalle, will receive $50,000 and the Ministry of Sport trophy. Second place is worth $20,000.
