Residents and passers-by in the vicinity of Church Street, South Cummingsburg, were thrown into a state of panic, some ducking for cover as gunshots rang out at approximately 13:00 hours yesterday. A plainclothes detective was shooting at a thief who snatched money and a gold chain from two men, one incident in close proximity of the other.
Kaieteur News understands that, in the vicinity of Austin’s Bookstore on Church Street, the criminal snatched a chain from a man who was walking on the pavement. He then proceeded to relieve another man of some money. As the bandit made his getaway, running west along Church Street, a friend of the man whose money was taken, a plainclothes detective, took off in hot pursuit of the robber.
According to bystanders, the detective discharged six rounds at the thief, hitting him. The spent shells littered the pavement in the vicinity of Astor Cinema. “He supposed to dead,” the robbery victim was overheard saying to one of his friends.
A trail of blood marked the flight of the criminal who, despite his injuries, made his way through the ‘Globe Yard’ on Waterloo Street, and proceeded to jump several fences as he made his escape.
By this time, the Police were summoned to the scene of the crime and they spread out, combing the area for the escaped bandit, who managed to elude capture.
