O’Neil vows to knockout Ewell
– pleads for corporate assistance
To date, she holds the distinction of being Guyana’s first and only woman world champion, an honour bestowed upon her after she dished out a sound beating to American Kathy Rivers, lifting the Woman’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) heavyweight title in the process.
Gwendolyn “Stealth Bomber” O’Neil followed up this feat with a sound thrashing of Trinidad’s Crystal Lessy to be adjudged the Women’s International Boxing Council (WIBC) champion.
Despite such nationalistic contributions the “Stealth Bomber” is still experiencing severe difficulties in acquiring tangible corporate help even as she keeps the Golden Arrowhead aloft.
Now, at her wits end, O’Neil is once again making an anguished plea for much needed support as she once again don national garb in answer to the call of duty.
She is scheduled to face Ewell, once again in St Maarten, in a much touted rematch after Ewell dubbed the victory a fluke.
O’Neil has scoffed at Ewell’s verbal attacks and has promised to end the bout prematurely this time around.
The proposed date for the rematch is September 27 and already O’Neil is attending to business in the National Park early in the morning and the Andrew “Sixhead” Lewis gym in the afternoons.
Speaking with Kaieteur News moments after a hectic workout in the gym, the champ bemoaned the absence of adequate sponsorship. She said that she is presently in dire need of vitamins and tonics among other necessities as she whips herself into shape.
O’Neil’s husband and manager, Eon Peters echoed his charge’s views. He disclosed that despite numerous letters to business entities seeking support O’Neil is still to receive adequate support.
He said that to date only two Samaritans—Farfan and Mendes and King Solomon’s Enterprises have responded to their plea for help.
Touching on the previous encounter with Ewell, O’Neil said that she was heartened by the support received from a large section of the Diaspora in St Maarten.
She said that the moral support received served to buoy her spirits thus allowing her to produce her best performance.
However, she feels that the presence of local media personnel can provide her fans back in Guyana with a more vivid description of the fight.
Quizzed on her fight plans for the second encounter O’Neil adamantly declared, “In the first fight I let her off the hook but this time around I will knock her out and keep the Golden Arrowhead flying high.”
Persons interested in viewing the champ during training can visit the Andrew “Sixhead” Lewis Gym between the hours of 4pm – 6pm Monday to Friday and 10am on Sunday mornings.
