Justice Cecil Kennard promised representatives of CLICO yesterday that the Kennard’s Memorial Turf Club will be leaving no stones unturned in an effort to ensure that their upcoming horse race meeting is successful.
Kennard was speaking at the insurance company’s launch of its 2008 ‘Day of Races’ held at their Head Office on Camp Street. The horserace meet is scheduled for Kennard’s Club, Bush Lot, Corentyne, on August 24.
“We will be leaving no stones unturned to ensure that the meet is successful,” Kennard said, before adding that the club is “grateful to CLICO for the sponsorship they have offered the sport of horse racing.”
The horseracing mogul from Berbice identified a few of the top horses that would be on show then lashed out at other clubs for not maintaining their facilities. He indicated that his club is an exception in that regard.
Great Memories, Delmar Gold, Spin and Squeeze were among the top horses that he said will take centre stage next Sunday. Also in the fray are two United States–born horses and one Trinidad–bred stallion.
“Clubs must make a determined effort to improve their facilities. You can’t have men and women using the same toilet facilities [for instance]. Kennard’s Memorial Turf Club is an exception,” Kennard told the media.
In addition, he urged other clubs to ensure that they are accountable for sponsors’ money as that would determine if sponsorship continues. “Sporting organisations should account for people’s money,” he counselled.
Kennard said that the people on the Corentyne are anticipating the event. He said that the turf is in good shape and the weather is expected to be good.
Touching on the subject of the sponsorship package, Kennard informed that CLICO will be putting up the prize monies for the eight races, providing trophies, advertising, decoration and entertainment.
CLICO’s Marketing and Sales Manager, Venita Bovell expanded on the company’s deal with the club stating that $2.7M in cash will be handed out to the top four performers in each of the eight races carded for the day.
Kennard collected that cheque at a presentation ceremony which immediately followed the press conference yesterday.
On hand to make the presentation was Bovell among other CLICO Managers and Officers. Bovell said that the total sponsorship package was in excess of $3.5M.
The additional money will go toward the “branding of the ground, print and audio advertisement and entertainment” she outlined. “Patrons will not be left out. They will receive bandanas and cell phone holders.
We also have a hat competition where the winner will receive an Ericsson cell phone and a Web Cam,” Bovell said.
The CLICO Manager also challenged Jockeys and horse trainers to earn the trophies and prize monies up for grabs. The CLICO ‘Day of Races’ has been on the Kennard Memorial Turf Club calendar of events since 2005.
