Civil society’s vision for Guyana is well nigh impossible

DEAR EDITOR,
Your article “Civil society outlines vision for secure Guyana by 2013”in the August 15, 2008 issue has set for itself a most noble goal i.e. Guyana becoming “…a secure and well-governed democratic society that operates by the rule of law (by 2013).”

I sincerely hope this was not just a photo opportunity for those gathered. I hope, too, that it is not only to make pronouncements that sound good in the ears of foreign listeners.

The media need to throw off that mantle of fear which makes them wary of reporting the grave injustices being meted out to the poor and disillusioned, particularly among the black youth.

The spate of police harassment across this country and among black communities will render that target date of 2013 a pipe dream if immediate steps are not taken to stop racial profiling in our society.

Why should young people from Buxton be made to feel they are unemployable? Why should the young (male) farmer be identified with planting drugs as soon as it is pointed out that he is a farmer and he is black?

Why should our young (black) males be picked up and grilled in the dumbest fashion about every crime that our police are yet to solve?

The “emancipation swoop” on youngsters is cruel, if not insensitive, and sends a signal to the conscience of this nation that all is not well and it can never be business as usual until some defining corrective measures are put in place.

Chief among those measures should be to clean-up the police force so that it delivers on its mandate to the people of this country.

Our lawmen must be made aware of the rights of the individual to humane treatment. In this way, innocent persons who are victims of biased and politically inspired accusations are treated with decency.

A person is innocent until proven guilty. It will also mean that persons assisting police in investigations are not treated or regarded as criminals.
