The Guyana Beverage Incorporated has continued to tangibly invest in the future of Guyana’s Football development with the unveiling of their second Chubby League Thursday at their Diamond, East Bank Demerara, Head Office.
Last year’s competition, which was won by Beacon Football Club, was contested at the under-13 level but the host association, Georgetown Football Association took a decision to up the age group for this year.
Competition is set to kick off on Monday with 5 matches at the Tucville ground with a total of 12 teams vying for the champion trophy and medals.
Managing Director of Guyana Beverage Inc. Robert Selman said his company was very pleased with the conduct and organising of last year’s competition and that was the main reason his company decided to continue the partnership this year with increased sponsorship.
“It is to keep the youths occupied and ensure that they stay away from drugs, which is crippling many countries today. We at Guyana Beverages support this tournament whole heartedly and we decided to use our kid’s product which is chubby.”
Selman also expressed gratitude to the GFA for putting things in place for the smooth running of the competition which he says will be run in a professional way once again.
“Come next year, we will also be putting out money to continue sponsoring this under competition because it is going very, very good.”
Each member of the winning team will receive one Chubby book bag with 12 exercise books, while snacks (Chubby & Island Mist Water) will also be made available for teams after every game. The competing teams have been placed into 2 groups of 6 each.
Group A consists of Beacons, Santos, Pele, Fruta Conquerors, Rhythm Squad and GFC. Group B is made up of Alpha United, Strike Again, Renaissance, Sunburst Camptown, BK International Western Tigers and Thomas United.
Teams will play each other using the round-robin format with the top 4 in each group advancing to the knock-out stage of the tournament.
Facing off in Monday’s opening matches from 08:30hrs, Alpha United come up against Strike Again and Pele oppose GFC.
At 10:00hrs, Sunburst Camptown play Renaissance and Fruta Conquerors tangle with Beacons. The final game will see Rhythm Squad matching skills with Santos.
