What appeared to be a normal court day at the Wales Magistrate’s Court, West Bank Demerara, turned out to pose a dilemma for police officers when yet another prisoner escaped from lawful custody.
Sherwin Glen, a 19-year-old prisoner, was able to flee from the court and successfully evade several police ranks who gave chase.
Shortly after noon yesterday news came that a prisoner had escaped from the court and had disappeared into the cane field aback of the Wales community.
Police later confirmed that Sherwin Glen, reportedly of the neighbouring village of Patentia, had made good his escape after appearing in court.
This newspaper has since learnt that Glen, along with a group of other prisoners, had been transported from the Georgetown Prisons to appear in court.
Glen was reportedly imprisoned after he was charged with simple larceny and felonious wounding.
The young man appeared before the presiding magistrate yesterday and was further remanded.
But it was when the unshackled youth was being escorted out of the court that he engaged the daring act. According to eyewitnesses, the young man made a mad dash out of the compound which houses both the Magistrate’s Court and the Wales Police Station.
The man could have been seen sprinting down a street parallel to the compound with armed police officers in hot pursuit.
However, an eyewitness said that Glen then plunged into a nearby canal and was able to swim over to the cane field where he vanished.
Eyewitnesses said that police declined to pursue the man further, thus he remained at large up to late yesterday.
