Malteenoes Sports Club and Guyana veteran all-rounder Lennox Cush has been included in the Stanford Superstars squad to face England in the Stanford 20/20 for US$20million on November 1 at the Stanford Cricket Ground in Antigua, while Test players Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan are the other Guyanese in the 17-man squad.
Travis Dowlin, the other Guyanese invited to the seven trials matches in Antigua, was not selected by the Sir Vivian Richards led Stanford Superstars Selection Panel.
The Stanford Superstars Selection Panel also includes Sir Everton Weekes, Curtly Ambrose, Lance Gibbs, Richie Richardson, Andy Roberts and Courtney Walsh.
The 33-year-old Cush is the oldest member of the side and could play a key role with his ‘tight’ off-spin, although his forte for most of his first-class career which began in 1996 has been his batting, which gave him two centuries from 38 matches.
The right-hander, who also plays in the USA leagues, competed in 28 regional one-day games and seven 20/20 matches and is ideally suited for the shortest version of the game despite undergoing a serious knee surgery which threatened to cut short his career.
Cush, who has not played at the regional first-class level since 2005, grabbed a hat-trick in the last Stanford 20/20 series and is eager to make the final team and do well in the match which could see him millions richer if England lose.
Number one ranked Test batsman Chanderpaul was allowed to miss the trail matches due to his English county cricket commitments, while Dwayne Bravo has also been included despite not being selected for the West Indies one-day tours of Canada and Pakistan due to an ankle injury.
During the camp in Antigua, the players were engaged in fitness work, upgrading their cricket skills, video analysis of their game and also competed in seven extremely competitive practice games where several players turned in outstanding performances.
A captain and deputy will soon be named and those selected were presented with contracts for review and will have 14 days to confirm their participation.
The 17-member squad will be engaged in a preparatory camp in Antigua on a date to be announced.
“We (the Stanford Superstars Selection Panel) believe this squad is very capable of doing justice to their selection to the Stanford Superstars squad to face England for the unprecedented purse of US$20million,” Sir Vivian said.
“There are several familiar faces in this Stanford Superstars squad but there are some exciting new additions such as Lindon James, Lionel Baker and Chad Hampson and this was due to the fact that there were some high quality performances from these individuals in the Stanford 20/20 Tournaments and they were also very impressive in the just concluded Stanford Superstars camp,” Sir Vivian pointed out.
Stanford Super Series is scheduled to commence on Saturday October 25 at 18:30hrs when defending Stanford regional champions Trinidad and Tobago face the Stanford Superstars under lights at the Stanford Cricket Ground in Antigua before England and Middlesex battle for supremacy the next day.
Trinidad & Tobago and Middlesex face off on October 27 while England and Trinidad & Tobago face each other on October 28.
Stanford Superstars play Middlesex on October 30 before the tournament climaxes with the most lucrative team sport event ever on November 1 when Stanford Superstars and England go head to head form 17:30hrs the US$20 Million winner-take-all prize.
The Stanford Superstars squad is: Lionel Baker (Montserrat), Sulieman Benn (Barbados), Dwayne Bravo (Trinidad and Tobago), Shivnarine Chanderpaul (Guyana), Lennox Cush (Guyana), Rayad Emrit (Trinidad and Tobago), Andre Fletcher (Grenada), Chris Gayle (Jamaica), Chad Hampson (Antigua and Barbuda), Lindon James (St Vincent and the Grenadines), Sylvester Joseph (Antigua and Barbuda), Xavier Marshall (Jamaica), Dave Mohammed (Trinidad and Tobago), Kieron Pollard (Trinidad and Tobago), Daren Powell (Jamaica), Ramnaresh Sarwan (Guyana), Jerome Taylor (Jamaica)
