After a one week break the Pouderoyen Inter-Block football competition is set to return with a bang this evening at the West Demerara Secondary School ground with an unprecedented six games scheduled to be played under floodlights.
Between today and Saturday when the round robin stages concludes, all 16 participating teams will be in action leading up to the eagerly awaited knockout round scheduled to commence on Sunday.
The competition is being hailed by Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Parliamentary Secretary Steve Ninvalle as one of the best since the ministry commenced similar activities across Guyana in March.
Today the action starts at 6:00pm when Michael Osbourne, Travis Bess, Hakeem Norville and Andy Bishop lead Phoenix Park against Canal. Nigel Garraway will captain Canal and will be supported by Steve Felix, Devon Layne and Troy Harding.
Game two will see Adrian Giddings spearheading Showtime `A’ attack against Bella Dam. Cleveland Walcott, Rawle Haynes and Tony Lopes will assist Giddings.
Captain Sherwin Liverpool will team up with Jermaine Thom, Quincy Waldron and Wendell St Hill to try to lift undefeated Showtime `B’ to their second victory when they tackle Depot Dam, who are yet to enter winners` row.
West Side Stars and Samaroo Dam play in game four while tournament favourites Beavers, which includes former national youth Anthony Harding, Michael Castello and Clyde Anderson, tackle Stewartville in the penultimate match of the evening. Beavers have won both matches played. Middle Street faces Crane in the final match of the evening.
The competition is being played on a Seven-A-Side basis. All games are for a duration of 30 minutes.
The team winning the competition will receive $50,000 and the Ministry of Sport trophy. Second place is worth $20,000.
Today’s card will be witnessed by Presidential Advisor Odinga Lumumba and Permanent Secretary Keith Herman Booker.
Meanwhile, Ninvalle is scheduled to meet this morning with president of the East Coast Football Association and representatives of the seven teams participating in the Plaisance Inter-Block competition.
The meeting is to iron out issues relating to the smooth running of the competition set to begin shortly.
Industry, Goedverwagting, 110 Street, Scheme, Backdam, 40 Block and Front Side are the teams that have signalled their intention of competing.
Beavers and Rovers top the points standings with 6 apiece in the respective Group C and D. Seven teams are locked on 3 points; Jetty, Coglan Dam and Middle Street, who have all played two games to date, while the other with one game each are Showtime A, Samaroo Dam, Showtime B and Canal.
