The Guyana Hockey Board is inviting its under-21 national squad members to a meeting at the Georgetown Cricket Club tomorrow August 15 at 6:00pm. The meeting is specifically to discuss preparations for the Pan American Hockey Federation Under-21 Championships being held in Port-of-Spain Trinidad from October 17 – 26.
After a ten year hiatus from international competition, the Guyanese men made strong showings when they returned in 2005. At the Pan American Indoor Cup in 2005, Guyana narrowly missed the Bronze medal losing to the USA by 7-6 in extra time.
The men then went on to capture silver in 2007 at the Alba Games and bronze at the Caribbean Championships later the same year.
Despite taking the gold at the junior Caribbean Cup in 1992, Guyana’s best showing to date at the junior Pan American level remains a 6th place out of 12 teams back in 1988 where they narrowly missed the semi-finals after defeating the highly ranked Chile only to go down by 4-3 in extra time against the USA once again.
The players listed on this year’s squad are: Kennedy Sooknauth, Renick Evelyn, Raphael DeGroot, Peter DeGroot, Zach Gonsalves, Philip Xavier, Eric Hing, Trevon Smith, Antonio Pemberton, Shaka Gill, Amarnauth Ramgathi, Anton Duke, Avinan Rampersaud, Joel Hunte, Trevon Young, Shaquelle Assanah, Ryan Primo, Andrew Stuart, Leon Bacchus, Ron Ramlall, Rockwell, Travis McKenzie, Leroy Jack, Orin Mayers, Kevin Fogenay and Michael Xavier. These players are asked to bring their passports to the meeting on Friday.
