One of Guyana’s most brilliant public servants, Dr. Kenneth King, who died on July 30th, 2008, was yesterday cremated following a moving and fitting prelude.
A special thanksgiving service was held at Smith’s Memorial Church on Brickdam, and attended by President Bharrat Jagdeo, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and Opposition Leader Robert Corbin, as well as a number of other prominent citizens.
President Jagdeo recalled the humility and willingness of Dr. King to continue providing service to Guyana even after he was ailing. “He demonstrated qualities we need to move the country forward.
He rose above the narrow confines of politics,” the President said, as he noted that Dr. King “served with distinction and selflessness”.
Other glowing tributes came from Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon, General Secretary of the PNC, Oscar Clarke, the African Cultural Development Association (ACDA), overseas organisations, other officials and the family of Dr. King, including his daughter, son and nieces.
The eulogy was read by his son Brian King and the tributes by friends for the family members by his daughter; doctor and professor Karen King-Aribisala.
PNC General Secretary Oscar Clarke reminded that Dr. King was a loyal and dedicated son of the soil who served his Party well under that regime and it was “this sense of service to country that was never confined”.
Following the church proceedings, the remains of the late politician were cremated at the Good Hope Crematorium.
Kenneth Fitzgerald Stanislaus King was born on August 22, 1929. He was a former Queen’s College student who later served in the then British Guiana Civil Service in the Department of Forestry.
Dr. King acquired scholarships to study forestry at the University of Bangor in Wales and also studied law at London University following which he gained his Bachelor of Law Degree in 1956 and Bachelor’s of Science. Dr. King also gained a Doctorate in Philosophy from Oxford University in 1963.
The late Dr. King, was not only also later part of the staff of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), but was also appointed Chief of Forestry Development Planning at FAO-World Bank in 1970-1971.
He later formed part of the PNC Government’s Cabinet as Minister of Economic Development and Vice-Chairman of the Guyana State Corporation.
Subsequently, under the People’s Progressive Party/Civic’s (PPP/C) ascension to office in 1992, Dr. King was appointed as Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium in Brussels and Permanent Representative to the European Union (EU).
