Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) took a 1-nill lead after game one of their three-match under-19 Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport HIV/AIDS Awareness programme cricket series against Bartica with an 18-run win at the DCC ground yesterday.
The host won the toss and elected to bat in the game which was reduced to a 30-over affair due to a late start caused by heavy overnight rain and reached 141-9 when their overs expired in sunny conditions.
Man-of-the-Match Matthew Marques then followed up his quick-fire 13 with 3-24 as the visitors fell for 123 in the final over in fading light.
Demerara under-19 wicketkeeper Denver Greaves thumped two fours and a six in a top score of 29 while Troy Nurse who hit two boundaries in 27 and National under-19 right-hander Royston Alkins who smashed three fours in 23 all chipped in with the bat for the Queenstown club.
Nurse and Marques added 35 in an entertaining fourth wicket stand as medium pacer Kevin Fredericks grabbed 3-29 and got support from Essequibo under-19 left-arm spinner Andrew Wong who took 2-11.
Sean Garraway offered fight with a cameo 32 which was decorated with three fours and two sixes, while Wong returned with the bat to lend support with 25 with a six and a four.
Garraway and Wong joined forces with their team on 41-5 and took them to 82 before Jamal Dillion (3-14) removed Wong to effectively extinguish the Bartica fight.
Alkins also supported with 2-28 with his off-spin to set up a must-win situation for Bartica today if they hope to keep the series alive ahead of the final game which is scheduled for tomorrow. Today’s 40-over match is fixed to commence at 11:00hrs.
The teams were met by representatives from the Sports Ministry before the start of play yesterday.
