The penultimate night of group rivalry in the Alpha United Football Club/CARIFESTA Championship saw Sunburst Camptown swamping host Georgetown Football Club (GFC) 7-1 in the feature game with the opening encounter producing a breathtaking 2-1 result in favour of Santos against Uitvlugt.
The main event started in heavy rain but it did not dampen the spirits or fire of the Sunburst side which raced to a 5-0 advantage by the half way mark.
Even while it was the home turf of the Bourda Boys, they just did not have an answer for the swarming nature of the Campbellville side’s offence.
Midfielder Dexter Mollyneaux and the lone striker Mervin Joseph combined for 5 of the goals, the nippy Mollyneaux netting a hat-trick.
He opened the scoring after 14 minutes; goal number two came just one minute later off a powerful shot by Kwame ‘Ronaldo’ LaFleur.
The double blast so early seemed to have knocked the wind out of the sails of GFC who have been gaining in strength and confidence in the Cellink Plus Premier League, having qualified for the big league as the runner up team in the Division one competition.
Camptown formation for the game saw them flooding midfield with 5 players opting for a single striker a system that proved to be very effective.
Reshawn Sandiford increased the lead in the 19th minute with Joseph getting into the act with the first of his double in the 29th minute.
All along the rain continued to come down consistently but rather than cooling things down it drove Camptown on. Joseph closed out his brace of goals one minute before the break to underline the dominance of his side.
The second half onslaught was not as consistent as the first since the Bourda Boys regrouped and were able to contain their opponents.
Mollyneaux completed his triple with strikes in the 46th and 52nd minute. GFC were able to pull one back 8 minutes before full time when Leon Bishop headed home off a corner.
The opening match up went down to the wire with Santos staving off a brave fight from West Demerara’s, Uitvlugt.
Many chances went by the wayside from both teams with the city being the main culprit and can count themselves lucky making it into the quarter-finals.
Old stalwart Seon McKenzie was their star scoring both goals from free kicks, the first from 20 meters out in the 20th minute and the winner in the 110th minute from 25 meters out, a low fierce shot past the 5 man wall that beat the keeper to his right at the Regent Street goal.
Uitvlugt, not as active as Santos still put up a good showing and were able to drawn level in the 73rd minute with a Lennox Torrington goal. They lacked the killer instinct to finish off their opponents.
The final two group matches were scheduled to be contested last evening featuring Alpha United against Mocha and Pele matching skills with BK International Western Tigers.
Teams already through to the quarter-finals are Sunburst Camptown, Bakewell Topp XX, Rosignol United, Pouderoyen and Santos.
Fruta Conquerors were winners over Silver Shattas but a subsequent protest lodged by Shattas contending that Conquerors played unregistered players is with the GFF for a decision to be made.
