A man who is accused of entering Guyana illegally will know his fate today as Magistrate Priya Beharry is expected to make her ruling.
Raju Vijay Kumar yesterday appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where the charge was read to him. On Sunday August 10 he entered Guyana by sea without the consent of an immigration officer.
To the charge Kumar pleaded guilty. He was represented by defense counsel Mohamed Zafar. Zafar asked that the court to exercise leniency on his client since he has pleaded guilty.
He told the court that his client is a 38-year-old driving instructor in Paramaribo where he is a citizen.
Zafar told the court that when his client was coming to Guyana and he presented his passport to the Dutch official, it was discovered that a page in his passport was missing.
He added that his client was advised that for that to be rectified it would take seven days, which for his client, was too long; his client needed to travel urgently.
Zafar said his client was further advised that he could travel with the passport and when he arrived in Guyana he should present himself to the Central Immigration Office with the photocopy and ask that an entry stamp to be placed in his passport.
