Derrick Mangal, whose stage name is Bright Colours, was on hand to receive his prize unlike his musical counterparts Young Bill Rogers and Lady Karen.
The two were absent from the presentation ceremony hosted by the African Cultural Development Association (ACDA) yesterday.
The ceremony, which was held at their headquarters at the Guyana Sports Club Ground, was the result of ACDA’s Emancipation Festival on August 1, last.
Opening the presentation ceremony was Ms. Violet Jean-Baptiste, Public Relations Officer for ACDA.
She said that she was thankful for all who participated in the Emancipation festival and helped make it a successful event.
John Barnwell, the coordinator for all of the events, said that this competition has been in existence for some 14 years.
He said that there were a variety of games including football and dominoes; there was also Shanto singing.
Barnwell added that the Shanto competition gave the public a chance to appreciate the talent there is in the society.
The dominoes competition was won by the Black Stallion club, followed by the Ministry of Education. They were both awarded trophies and monetary incentives, courtesy of Senvia Money Transfer Services, one of the major sponsors of the Emancipation activities.
The other major sponsor was the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company. Mr. Marlon Williams, Marketing Manager for Senvia, said that the company is pleased to be associated with ACDA.
He added that it is committed and would continue to support the organization in the future.
GT&T donated prizes to people who had the stubs from the entrance ticket, including items from their new collection of “Bird Phones”.
Ten lucky persons who would have participated in the Emancipation Day celebrations each received $10,000, courtesy of GT&T.
