A mentally-challenged man was wounded last Saturday when he attempted to enter a car parked outside the movie World DVD and Video Club on D’Urban Street, Georgetown.
Eyewitnesses said that the man, who appeared to be mentally challenged, broke into a woman’s car, licensed as PHH 1013, by using a pair of scissors. He then attempted to board the car and was attacked by the woman husband.
The woman was at a salon getting her hair done, and her car was parked outside when she saw a man trying to enter.
She immediately left the salon and went to D’Urban Street and informed her husband about the situation.
Her husband, she said, armed himself and attacked the insane man, first kicking and then beating him.
The insane man retaliated and ended up being wounded on his forehead, arm and hand.
Witnesses later said that the man of unsound mind was well known in the area for his labour, and that he does not trouble anyone. They added that he goes by the name ‘Soldier,’ because he is an ex-soldier of the Guyana Defence Force.
The police were summoned, and they arrived at about 10 minutes after the incident, by which time the woman and her husband had already left the scene, leaving the injured man bleeding and sitting on the pavement outside of the video club and boutique.
The witnesses say that the police circled the area for over half an hour in search of plastic to put on the seat of their vehicle before taking the wounded man into their vehicle to take him away. When asked where they were taking ‘Soldier’, the policemen did not answer.
