A $55M Uniform Assistance programme is slated to commence today, and is expected to benefits some 26,000 school children countrywide.
This is according to Human Services Minister Priya Manickchand, who noted that $15M will be turned over to the Amerindian Affairs Ministry, which is responsible for the Hinterland communities.
According to Manickchand, the $1,500 vouchers are not a means to an end, but rather are meant to be some form of assistance.
She noted that children already benefiting from public assistance will also benefit for the programme.
According to Minister Manickchand, her ministry will be working will several groups, including the women’s arm of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR).
She noted that her ministry will be receiving the vouchers today, and distribution will commence almost immediately.
The minister advised that the vouchers were only for the purchase of school accessories and uniforms. Measures are in place to ensure that the vouchers should not be abused, she added.
