All health facilities and institutions operating in Guyana will be put on alert during the hosting of CARIFESTA X in the country.
This is according to Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, who noted that all medical staff will be denied leave during the time that the event is being hosted in Guyana.
Medical personnel are expected to be present at all CARIFESTA locations in case of emergencies, while the Health Ministry is inspecting restaurants, hotels and all service providers providing food to the people.
Dr Ramsammy said that the inspections are being carried out to ensure that these places meet the minimum standards and provide safe food to the people.
Fogging exercises have also been completed in various parts of the country, and more are expected to commence in areas targeted by the Ministry of Health, especially in those areas where there will be events for CARIFESTA. “So we are going to ensure that environmentally we keep Guyana safe for people to come,” Ramsammy said.
In addition to the specific health care facilities, mobile centres and ambulances are also expected to be at the locations. Minister Ramsammy made a special appeal for persons to help keep the place clean.
“CARIFESTA is our event, it is not Government event; it is Guyana on show.”
He also expressed his disappointment that there are groups in Guyana which are either lukewarm or are not coming forward to participate in the event in a way that shows that Guyana is coming out and putting itself on show.
In this regard, he called for the political parties to show more interest in the event, and to give support.
The Health Minister says that it is his personal view that the PNCR has only shown lukewarm interest in the hosting of the event.
“I think it is time we put away our differences and put aside the petty things that keep us apart,” Minister Ramsammy said.
