A special malaria team has been deployed in the Omai area following reports at the Ministry of Health of an increase in cases there.
At a press conference held on Saturday, Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, said that, currently, Omai is the number one hot spot for malaria in Guyana.
It was explained that there is increased mining activity in the area, as several small miners are in search of gold that is believed to still be in the area, abandoned by OMAI.
Ramsammy, however, assured that there is no outbreak of the infection at this time.
“The OMAI area constitutes a great threat for us, and therefore we have sent a special team to work there…I have instructed that the local health workers be supported by the national programme in order to ensure that we keep that area under control,” the minister said.
He also disclosed that health workers from Region Ten are lending support to ensure the incidence of malaria does not escalate. “There is no huge outbreak of malaria in that area, but we believe it represents a potential site for problems, so we are responding to it”, Dr. Ramsammy said.
Meanwhile, the minister is urging residents, workers and miners of the area to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves, including using the impregnated bed nets being provided by the Ministry of Health through the Global Fund Malaria Project in Region Seven.
He also advised that persons with symptoms of malaria, which include fever, headaches, loss of appetite, sweating and joint pains, visit the nearest health facility so that they could benefit from early treatment.
In relation to reports of an outbreak in the infection in Wakapao, Ramsammy said that his ministry has not been able to determine if that is so.
However, he explained that the national program will be visiting all the areas so as to ensure things are kept under control.
