Dear Editor,
Guyana’s descent into lawlessness is no longer a matter of conjecture.
The latest indicators are examples of egocentric political hacks being appointed into the intelligence-gathering arm of the Guyana Police Force.
These latest recruits are the ultimate blight that has scarred a once proud organisation. They target the young and confident who dare to be critical of the present political administration.
Those who want to be independent of the political machinery do find it hard, particularly if they do not look like this new breed of police. Black youths are particularly at risk in this new environment. They are placed under surveillance, and are eventually picked up for minor or no offences, and are grilled about armed robberies, connections with wanted criminals, and possession of arms and drugs. Where are the voices of reason when these defenceless persons are under threat?
The strategies being used represent the worst kind of human rights abuse. They use the fact that you do not share the same loyalties as them to generate biased information to prepare for the arrest and incarceration of the hapless victims.
Many innocent are painted guilty because of this use of suspicion to create “evidence” that suits their purposes and those who employ them.
All this is transpiring right before the eyes of CARICOM, GHRA and professional bodies, who are too busy to keep track of the demise of so many of our young people. CARICOM leaders should distance themselves from this Administration, which has given birth to the rampant drug trade, crime and corruption that has overtaken Guyana.
This country has endured much shame because of short- sighted policies, including this misguided approach to security. It is time all Guyanese look out for each other, and not be fooled by the clever machinations of a clueless Administration bent on imposition of a police state.
