Police have detained the driver of a car that killed a 55-year-old woman from Crane Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara.
Merlyn Clarke died while being transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital at some time around 20:00 hours on Friday.
Reports are that motor car PEE 9174 was heading north along the Goed Fortuin Public Road when it struck Clarke, who was crossing the road.
According to a police source, the 55-year-old mother of one reportedly came from behind a parked Canter truck and ended up in the path of the car.
She was immediately rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital before she was referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, but died on her way there.
The woman’s daughter, Dionne Clarke, said that she last saw her mother at about 18:00 hours yesterday when she left to attend church.
Clarke said she received a call from the West Demerara Regional Hospital saying that her mother was involved in an accident. According to the woman, when she next saw her, her mother was dead.
She recalled that her mother was always a very jovial person, and her last place of employment was at the West Demerara Regional Hospital, were she was employed as the supervisor of the kitchen.
