In an operation conducted by ranks from Georgetown, police have arrested a Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo man in connection with last February’s slaughter at Bartica.
The 34-year-old man, who is said to be a farmer, was arrested on Thursday at his home, and is being detained at the Brickdam Police Station. Kaieteur News understands that an employee of the farmer was also held.
Relatives said that the man had informed them some time ago that he was under surveillance. According to a relative, police officials at CID headquarters gave them conflicting information about the reason for the men’s arrest.
“First, they said that it was for robbery under arms, then they said that it was for drugs, and then they said it was in connection with the Bartica massacre,” the relative said.
The man’s attorney also told Kaieteur News that he was informed that his client was being held for questioning about armed robberies and other matters, including the mass killings at Bartica.
Twelve people, including three policemen, were slain in February by heavily-armed gunmen who invaded the mining community.
Meanwhile, police are still questioning a 16-year-old boy in connection with the killings of the eight miners at Lindo Creek in June. The teen was arrested on Wednesday near Ituni.
Police officials say that the youth is a member of the gang that is led by notorious fugitive Rondell ‘Fine Man’ Rawlins, whom investigators have blamed for the Lindo Creek killings.
