Seventeen-year-old Sorojinie Rai, who copped the crown at the first ever Miss Wakenaam Pageant, held on August 2, has won a trip to the majestic Kaieteur Falls.
Excited at flying in an aircraft for the first time, Rai, accompanied by her aunt, Seeta, was taken to Kaieteur Falls on Thursday. The trip was sponsored by Farouk, Bibi and Anisha Amin, of Amin and Sons Limited, business people.
Rai, of Belle Plain, Wakenaam, told Kaieteur News that she got the inspiration and encouragement to enter the pageant from her family.
Winning, she added, came as a surprise but the experience has been wonderful. “The experience was great and very exciting,” Rai said.
She also said that since she heard there was a possibility she could go to Kaieteur News, she became excited and was really happy for the opportunity. According to her, relatives and friends are very proud of her.
Rai noted that the pageant was a huge success, with thousands of persons attending this first ever event of its kind to be held in Wakenaam. This newspaper understands that the event will be held annually.
The final of the Miss Wakenaam pageant was held on August 2 at Wakenaam Community Ground.
The pageant was launched with an objective of having all the contestants trained as HIV/AIDS peer educators.
Contestants were also trained in the areas of basic makeup, personal hygiene, stress management and exposure to leadership qualities. All of the contestants of the pageant were between 15 and 18 years old.
