Carifesta X will be a literary firework, a whetting of appetite and a quenching of thirst.
In 1972, many of the writers who participated in the first Carifesta in Guyana have just opened or were in the process of opening their account on the literature-scape of the region. Many of those writers have gone on to make significant contributions to literature.
Some of those writers who came here for the literary exposition included Robin Dobru from Suriname, Sam Selvon, Ismith Khan and Errol Hill from Trinidad and Tobago, Shake Keane form St Vincent, Dunstan St. Omer and Rodrick Walcott from St Lucia and Austin Clarke and John Wickham from Barbados. Of the listed writers, Austin Clarke will be here for Carifesta X.
For Carifesta ’72, the local writers were well-represented namely through Martin Carter, A. J. Seymour, Rooplall Monar, Shana Yardan, Sheik Sadeek, Michael Gilkes, Henry Josiah.
Seymour gave the Caribbean Festival of Arts an enduring legacy in the compilation of ‘New Writing in the Caribbean’ while the distaff side produced, ‘Guyana Drums’ – the first anthology of poetry by women writers in Guyana.
Most of the writers slated to participate in Carifesta X have already made (and continue to make) their mark on the literature-scape of Guyana, the Caribbean and the world from the Nobel Prize Laureate to winners of The Guyana Annual literary competitions.
Some of the overseas writers slated to participate at Carifesta X include Derek Walcott, David Dabydeen, Pauline Melville, Sasenarine Persaud, Elly Niland, Peter Jailall, James Richmond, Ian McDonald, Austin Clarke (Barbados/Canada), Cynthia McLeod (Suriname) , Willi Chen (Trinidad and Tobago), Nancy Morejon (Cuba), Harry Sealey (Dominica), John R. Lee (St Lucia), and Lutalo Massimba (Bro. Resistance) of Trinidad and Tobago.
The local scene for Carifesta X is well represented by writers/performers including Ruel Johnson, Roopnandan Singh, Kojo McPherson, Rochelle Christie, Darren Henry, Francis Quamina Farrier, Gentian Miller, Bobby Fernandes, Mohamed Yasin, Cheryl Winters, Edison Jefford, Paloma Mohamed, Petamber Persaud among others.
Many of the local writers would be launching books including Stephanie Bowry, Ruel Johnson, Bobby Fernandes, Donald Trotman, Roopnandan Singh, Ian McDonald and Petamber Persaud.
Guyana, the Caribbean and the rest of the world brace yourselves for a literary firework, a whetting of appetite and a quenching of thirst at Carifesta X, 2008 in Guyana.
