The ban on the television station CNS Channel 6 will end tomorrow, and the management of the television station said yesterday that it is fully ready to recommence broadcast.
Broadcasting is scheduled to resume from 00:01 hours, exactly four months from when the ban was instituted.
According to Chandra Narine Sharma, the owner of the television station, programming will be no different from before the ban, except that the programme ‘Voice of the People’ will no longer be live.
Despite the events that led up to the ban, Sharma made it clear that there would be no change in the tone of the television station’s programming, and in particular the tone of the programme ‘Voice of the People.’
“I will criticise any minister of the Government, or member of the police force who is not doing their duty. It is my responsibility,” Sharma said.
Commenting on the reasons surrounding the closure of Channel 6, Sharma explained that he felt that the closure of his television station was to financially and politically cripple him, being a Presidential candidate, by another Presidential candidate, through the use of State apparatus.
Despite being off the air for so long, Sharma demonstrated full confidence that the television station would be able to regain its advertising contracts.
He explained that while four months was a long time, and advertisers and sponsors could not be expected to wait, work was already being done to reacquire sponsors for the programmes being broadcast.
Sharma explained that while he had lost considerable revenue from the temporary closure of his television station, the closure had caused significant discomfort and displeasure to his staff; some of whom had secured temporary jobs at other businesses during the closure.
Sharma made special note that while his business and his family were significantly affected, the Government was affected by a loss of revenue for the four months of the television station’s closure.
He revealed that the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) was deprived of approximately $2.8 million which he would have paid in taxes.
While the court action that Sharma has with the Government is still ongoing, he has expressed the possibility of filing additional cases against the Government for damages.
According to Sharma, in the initial case, he did not file for damages. He made it clear that the television station would not abandon the court cases.
