Early yesterday morning, a fire broke out in the Maternity Ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital, creating some fear and panic among staff and patients.
This newspaper understands that there was no major damage and the situation was quickly brought under control.
However, patients — pregnant women and women who had already delivered — had to flee the building briefly.
In April, there was a similar incident in the maternity ward when staff and patients were affected for about two hours after fluctuating current caused damage to several fluorescent lamps in the ward.
However, a GPHC statement said that the electrical circuits were automatically disconnected by the protective schemes, preventing any further damage to the building and, more importantly the in-patients and hospital staff.
The situation was restored to normalcy about two hours after the incident.
As a precautionary measure, hospital officials had summoned the Guyana Fire Service, while staffers and patents, along with the babies, evacuated the building until normalcy was restored.
