Police corporal Mark George has been discharged from hospital, one month after he was shot by Magistrate Gordon Gilhuys.
George was released from the Georgetown Public Hospital’s High Dependency Unit on Wednesday, into the care of his family.
According to a family member, who prefers not to be identified, doctors at the hospital came to the decision after George started to show signs of psychological trauma and depression.
“They thought it best to have him around family members and surrounded by people he knows,” the family member said.
However, George is expected to report to the hospital for an examination some time later today.
According to the relative, George has shown great signs of improvement.
“I know it was a tough journey for him; he has weathered the storm, and because his injuries require special treatment, and I am grateful to the doctors for the treatment they offered.”
Other family members are of the opinion that the injured corporal should be sent overseas for further medical treatment.
This, however, does not seem likely, since the hospital officials have declined to make a referral for such.
According to family members, when hospital officials were approached on the issue, they give all assurances that they are capable of dealing with George’s condition.
The Guyana Police Force has since indicated its willingness to assist with getting George overseas for treatment.
In the meantime, no charges have been laid against Magistrate Gordon Gilhuys, who admittedly shot George. To date, the magistrate has only been made to lodge his weapon, and has since not presided over any other matter in his court.
Initial reports had stated that the police sent the file to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.
The shooting occurred on Thursday, June 26 last, in the dead of night, while the magistrate’s vehicle was reportedly parked on Woolford Avenue.
