The ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the National Sports Commission (NSC) expressed sincere sympathy to the family and friends of the late Edward Ramkarran Singh who passed away, at age 50, on August 3.
A release from the NSC said ‘Sir Eddie’ who was born at Paradise Village on the East Coast of Demerara was a man with a genuine interest in sport, especially school sports.
“After school, Sir Eddie ventured into the world of work as an eighteen-year-old Acting Teacher in 1976 at the Victoria Primary School.
Sir Eddie was then transferred to the Golden Grove Primary School and subsequently to the Golden Grove Secondary School as a mathematics teacher where he spent most of his life teaching” the release stated.
Singh, who served as Senior Master at the Golden Grove Primary School, was later appointed Headmaster of the Ann’s Grove Community High School.
He graduated from sports in the school system to the position of the National Sports Secretary and subsequently National Sports Chairman of the Guyana Teachers’ Union National Sports Committee and was responsible for the organisation of the GTU National Schools Athletics, Cycling and Swimming Championships.
Singh was also a graduate of the University of Guyana with a Bachelor of Education degree majoring in Mathematics.
According to the release ‘Sir Eddie’ was involved in the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) as a member of the Council of the AAG, a trained IAAF Competitions Director of the AAG with responsibility for organising competitions of the Association.
He was also certified at the Regional Development Centre in San Juan, Puerto Rico and was an IAAF Certified TOECS Lecturer which enabled him to conduct such courses for Technical Officials locally, in the Caribbean and South America.
He became qualified for this position after successfully completing a course at the Regional Development Centre, San Fe Argentina.
The Sports Ministry and NSC says Singh was described as a person who was very organised, disciplined, strict and ‘soft at heart’.
“The National Sports Commission would like to join with the thousands of students across the country and the sporting fraternity to extend sincere condolences to his immediate family and friends” the release concluded.
