The Blue Flame Women’s Group (BFWG) has received just over $1.08 Million, which will now enable the construction of specialized peanut butter manufacturing equipment to mechanize the process.
The BFWG which is located in Hosororo, in the North West of Guyana, also received a donation of two brush cutters last year to assist the cocoa farmers.
On an investment outreach to Region One in late 2007, Anette Arjoon, Coordinator for North West Organics, accompanied a team from the Office of the Prime Minister, GoInvest and the Ministry of Agriculture, where she learnt of the need for markets for the peanuts produced by the farmers of Wauna and Kamwatta.
The National Working Group (NWG), which made the monetary donation, comprises representatives from the government and the private sector, and its financial support is provided under the Government of Guyana (GoG)/United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Programme of Cooperation.
The NWG on Public Private Partnerships for the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) is a direct outcome of the first Caribbean regional initiative expressly geared at establishing a development partnership with the private sector in the pursuit of the MDGs. The first meeting of this group was held in Guyana at the end of June 2005. The work of the group was guided by the following terms of reference:
promote the Private Sector as key development partner with the Government of Guyana to achieve the MDGs; and provide support and guidance for the implementation of the viable projects which emerged out of the Caribbean MDG Business Initiative 2005.
Since its establishment, the NWG has collaborated with a number of NGOs and community-based organisations (CBOs) to enhance their capacity to deliver to their respective communities.
Seeing an opportunity for a new North West Organics product, Arjoon undertook to have the BFWG purchase the peanuts which was converted into peanut butter. A ready market was found in Le Meridien Pegasus, which features this new product in its breakfast buffet. Special focus will be on partnerships between the Government, the private sector, civil society and/or the international community; and provide support and guidance to new initiatives in which the private sector makes a positive contribution, where possible in partnership with other actors, towards the MDGs while maintaining a profit orientation.
