A 19-year-old guard attached to the MMC Security Service took his own life by placing his shotgun under his chin and blowing his brains out.
Michael Thomas, of Princes Street, Lodge, was pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital at around 20:00hrs after he was rushed there by colleagues.
The incident took place at the MMC Security Service headquarters located at Happy Acres, East Coast Demerara.
Sources told this newspaper that Thomas had just reported for work and was awaiting transportation to take him on patrol duty when he shot himself.
Officials at the company were tight lipped about the incident when this newspaper visited the scene last evening.
Thomas’s hat lay in a huge pool of blood at the entrance of the MMC headquarters, while there was a trail of blood of about 100 meters leading to the main East Coast Highway.
Several of his colleagues were seen standing transfixed after the tragic incident.
One of them said that since Thomas arrived at work, he kept repeating that he wanted to go home, since he wasn’t feeling well.
At the dead man’s home in Princes Street, neighbours were in a state of shock after receiving the news from MMC personnel.
They described Thomas as being a very jovial person, who was very friendly with everyone he met.
At the hospital, his mother, Carol Hossannah, was inconsolable and had to be restrained by relatives. It is not clear what led Thomas to take this course of action, but there were reports that he was having some domestic issues.
