The Guyana Japan Karate Association received an invitation from the International Shotokan Karate Federation of Canada to participate in the 2008 ISKF World Shoto Cup which will be held in Toronto, Canada, from October 8 to 14.
This important and historical event is being held at the Ryerson University and it will be the first tournament under the ISKF since the body became independent of the J. K. A. World Federation.
The ISKF has now evolved from a Pan American body to a World Body with over 40 member countries including Guyana. It is anticipated that most or even all the ISKF member countries will be participating in the Tournament.
Master Teruyuki Okazaki, 10th Dan and Master Yutaka Yaguchi, 9th Dan who were representatives of the JKA WF and who established the ISKF in 1977, with the headquarters in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, will be present for the Canada event.
The tournament is open to youths who are Brown Belt and higher and also for “only” Black Belt Adults and Seniors.
Seven adults and twenty-four juniors have indicated their willingness to attend the tournament and their entry forms have been already submitted.
Some parents have expressed their desire to accompany their children. Most of these entrants and parents attendance and participation will depend heavily on their acquisition of the required Canadian visas and funding.
Four adults and twelve juniors were selected to form the National Team. The adults are Caribbean medalists David Hardy and Nathalie Gibson who will be accompanied by seasoned campaigners Krysten Sewett and Troy Parboo.
The Junior Team members are Caribbean medalists Kristina Cheeks, Chantelle Sewett and Samuel Ming while the remainder of the team is Kemo Cornelius, Mikhail Broomes, Phillip Ramalho, Christy Dey, Prince Roberts, Joshua Broomes, Avian Rodrigues, Eric Hing and Shane Wilkinson.
According to Master Frank Woon-A-Tai, 8th Dan, who recently visited Guyana to celebrate 40 years of Karate and who has just returned to Canada to continue with the preparations for the 2008 Shoto Cup, much can be expected from the selected Guyana Team, especially the juniors who are all top performers and medalists in their respective age groups at the recently concluded National Championships.
He is also of the opinion that with good application and continuous training Guyana will definitely be in for some medals. Sensei Jeffrey Wong is the only Senior competitor who has entered for this tournament.
Sensei Christopher Chaves was selected as the Coach, Sensei Amir Khouri will be going as a judge in the tournament and Mr. Colin Ming will be assisting in the team’s management.
