Six men, including three brothers and their father, were remanded to prison when they appeared before Magistrate Yohanseh Cave at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court charged with the murder of 57-year-old Niranjan.
The men, Vishal Singh his brothers Vishnu and Akash, along with their father, Balzie Singh and Satesh Khemraj and Parasaram Lalchand, of Lusignan squatting area, were not required to plead to the charge.
They were arrested last week following Niranjan’s death at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Niranjan was allegedly badly beaten by the men when he went to enquire about his stolen bicycle on July 26th.
Niranjan died two days later at the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was receiving treatment for a punctured lung, three huge chops on his head and two to his jaw.
He also suffered two broken hands and a broken leg.
Kaieteur News understands that thieves had broken into Niranjan’s home at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara and stole his bicycle and an all-purpose mill. A few days later, Niranjan saw a man with his bicycle and confronted him.
The man reportedly claimed that he had borrowed the bicycle and offered to take Niranjan to the person from whom he had borrowed the cycle.
When they approached the area, the man began screaming for, ‘Thief! Murder!’
This alerted several residents who came out armed with sticks and cutlasses, and attacked Niranjan.
The elderly man desperately tried to run away but fell down and was chopped several times about his body and beaten with sticks by the residents, who left him for dead.
When his relatives heard what had happened, they contacted the police and a patrol comprising soldiers and policemen responded.
Despite the efforts of doctors at the medical institution, Niranjan succumbed from his wounds.
Police, acting on information received, subsequently detained the villagers.
