Shooting death in B’dos may be work of Guyanese

Reports coming out of Barbados have suggested that a Guyanese was involved in the fatal shooting of his countryman, Christopher Griffith, and the wounding of bar owner Seelochanie Samuels, a little over two weeks ago.

Sources in Barbados have indicated to this newspaper that Griffith may have been the main target of the attack which occurred at a popular Guyanese bar on Bay Street, St. Michael, which is frequented by Guyanese living and working on the island.

According to a source, there are reports that Griffith, who hailed from the Essequibo Coast, may have developed problems with one of his countrymen.

Police on the island have so far not arrested anyone in connection with the shooting and the Barbadian media has been adopting a low key approach to the incident.

Griffith’s body was returned to Guyana last week and he was buried on Thursday. Samuels is reportedly recovering and has since been discharged from hospital.

She reportedly underwent successful surgery to remove the bullets that were lodged in her body.

Relatives of the two Guyanese had initially believed that the incident was a direct attack on the Guyanese community on the island. They have almost ruled out robbery as a motive for the attack.

Two Saturdays ago, two gunmen walked into a bar operated by Samuels and shot dead Christopher Griffith and also wounded Samuels when she tried to intervene.

Samuels’s relatives are angry that with the way the matter is being treated by the Barbadian authorities.
