President of the Guyana Public Transportation Association (GPTA), Nicholas Nnami, yesterday unveiled the plans of the GPTA to hold a seminar on awareness and training for the General Transportation Operators (minibus, taxi operators) on August 17.
While the seminar will focus on minibus operators, the GPTA said that since it deals with public transportation as a whole, taxi and hire car operators will also be invited to join in the seminar.
The aim of the seminar is to sensitise the General Transportation Operators to etiquette and manners, Nnami explained. At the same time, matters like road insurance will also be touched upon.
The seminar will be conducted at the Head Office of the GPTA, 96 Robb and New Garden Streets, and will feature guest speakers who will guide and teach the operators the basics of good etiquette and manners.
“We (the GPTA) just want to sensitise the operators to the correct way of using the roadways,” said Nnami, as he stressed that the correct usage of the roadways also had to do with manners, and was not only about driving.
Nnami said that the GPTA felt that it was time for the operators to be given the opportunity to revisit the law and the correct way of dealing with people, to refresh their memories.
He noted that the last time a seminar similar to this one was done was approximately five years ago.
Plans are already underway, Nnami explained, to hold seminars like this one on a more regular basis. With Carifesta X just a few weeks away, Nnami explained that it would be good for the operators to be sensitised before the Festival of Arts comes to Guyana.
Nnami explained that the seminar was not influenced by Carifesta.
