National Drainage and Irrigation contracts to the sum of $268M were yesterday signed off by Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud, for the commencement of drainage and irrigation works countrywide.
Among the works to be completed are the rehabilitation of Bellamy West End sluice, Mahaica, construction of irrigation structures, Garden of Eden, rehabilitation of Kuru Kuru Sluice and servicing of sluice doors.
Speaking at the simple ceremony yesterday, Minister Persaud said that the signing of the contracts is an indication of the expansion of agricultural cultivation in rural farming communities, which supports the Ministry’s ‘Grow More Food Campaign.’
It is the aim of the Ministry, he said, to provide necessary drainage and associated infrastructure to farmers to aid in their farming activities.
This effort represents what the Ministry is doing across the country to rehabilitate and expand the capacity of existing drainage structure, Persaud added.
Minister Persaud urged contractors, who were present, to deliver the projects on time with a high quality of work as engineers and other supervisory staff will be monitoring in collaboration with farmers.
In Region Three, there will be the construction of a drainage sluice at De Willem, West Coast Demerara, to the cost of $153 M.
The aim is to improve the drainage system within De Willem/Zeeburg by constructing a new sluice at De Willem on the Sea Defence. This project, when completed, will drain some 600 hectares of agricultural land mostly under sugar cane.
The construction at La Union Outfall channel, Essequibo, Region Two, is expected to be done over 12 weeks at a cost of $72.3M.
At present, the La Union Outfall channel suffers severe erosion along its channel bank, which reduces the draining efficiency of the sluice. The rehabilitation of Bellamy West End Sluice, Mahaica, will cost $8.9M.
In Region Four, there will be the construction of irrigation structures at Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara, to the sum of $27.9 M.
