A week after a child rapist chopped him in his head, Deopaul Manie succumbed at the Georgetown Public Hospital yesterday, dealing a double-blow to the small community of Cottage, Mahaicony, on the East Coast of Demerara.
Manie’s assailant hanged himself soon after he was confronted with the accusation of rape.
Manie and his reputed wife, Norawattie Khedoo, were attacked two Sundays ago by their neighbour, Kenrick Chisholm, when they confronted him after he had taken a young relative to a nearby house and raped her.
According to reports, Chisholm and his neighbours had attended a wedding in the community, but later went to Khedoo’s shack, where they continued drinking.
When they all became intoxicated, they fell asleep. Apparently Chisholm had other ideas.
In the early hours of the morning, he awoke his neighbour’s nine-year-old niece, and led her past her sleeping guardians before taking her to a nearby house, where he raped her.
The child was medically examined, and it was confirmed that she had fresh bruises on her vagina.
By this time, Khedoo had awoken and immediately missed her niece and Chisholm, whom she thought were both sleeping, like the rest of the occupants in the house.
By this time also, Chisholm had completed his dastardly act and was returning the child to her aunt when Khedoo confronted him.
Residents told this newspaper that Chisholm, who was armed with a cutlass, began chopping Khedoo about her body, causing her to collapse on a dam where their homes are situated.
He then asked for Manie, who by then was awakened by the commotion outside the shack.
When Manie pushed his head through a window to see what was happening outside, Chisholm chopped him in his head.
Kaieteur News understands that a piece of bone was lodged in Manie’s brain, and this may have led to his demise.
His reputed wife was treated at the Mahaicony Hospital, and has since been discharged.
