Police are probing the death of 25-year-old prisoner Augustino Smith, who drowned at around 09:30 hrs while swimming in the Mazaruni River.
A statement from Director of Prisons Dale Erskine said that the mishap occurred while Smith and other prisoners were cleaning themselves after they had worked at the piggery.
However, Erskine was quick to point out that prisoners are not authorised to swim in the river.
According to reports, Smith and about 18 other labourers had finished their chores and were given permission to clean themselves.
It was reported that, while swimming (an unauthorised act) in the river, he was observed to be struggling. A fellow prisoner tried to assist him, but Smith went under the surface.
Another prisoner then dived below and was able to locate Smith. He brought him to the surface.
“The supervising officer performed CPR on the unconscious prisoner, but the prisoner did not respond.”
The statement added that Smith was immediately taken to the Bartica Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. According to the release, Smith was convicted for possession of cannabis, and was sentenced to three and a half years.
His address at the time of incarceration was Canvas City, Linden, and his date of release was recorded as March 13, 2010.
Smith’s relatives have been informed about his demise, the release said.
“The Prisons Administration regrets the loss of the prisoner’s life and expresses its sincere condolences to all bereaved relatives.” The statement concluded.
