A motion, described as informal since it emerged during the PPP’s 29th Congress, was moved at one of the sessions yesterday, but the Congress declined to take any decision on it.
The People’s Progressive Party’s 29th Congress sought to have the Constitution of Guyana amended to have President Bharrat Jagdeo serve a third term in office.
Kaieteur News was told that party member Reepu Daman Persaud moved the motion, with much support from delegates at the congress, during the plenary session.
The motion also sought to have the PPP make a special intervention for the Constitution of Guyana to be amended.
The amended constitution limits any President to a maximum of two terms.
This was again discussed during the workshop sessions, where the issue was reinforced.
Delegates, at that point in the congress, pointed out that the President has been very lenient with many issues and should be more forceful in his decisions.
Kaieteur News was told that the Head of State was congratulated by delegates for a job well done for the country.
Other motions that were raised included economic issues, the setting up of a development bank, and fighting corruption.
And Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon, conducted a presentation called ‘Vision 2011.’
In his presentation, Luncheon looked at the selection of presidential candidates, pointing out to supporters that they should not be distracted by reports in the media.
He noted that the decision on the presidential candidate is solely a party decision, and not the media’s.
In the elections for members of the Central Committee, President Jagdeo received in excess of 100 votes more than the second person, former President Janet Jagan.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony, was also among the elected members to secure a large bloc of the votes.
The elections were held to elect the 35 members and five Candidate Members to the Central Committee.
The newly elected members of the Central Committee will elect a new Executive Committee for the party at the first meeting, and secretaries to the various committees, including a General Secretary.
