His progress has been very encouraging over the past few months and Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club rider Tony Simon has established himself as a serious competitor when he blistered the entire field to win the 4th annual Regan Rodrigues Memorial 50-mile Cycle Road Race on the West Demerara yesterday.
It has been quite a while that a rider has beaten his opponents in such a manner; Tony winning the contest ahead of the 2nd place finisher by 3 minutes as he crossed the finish line all alone in 2 hours 1 minute 44 seconds.
Claiming the second spot was Alonzo Greaves who out sprinted Darren Allen, Ian Jackson, Daniel Ramchurejee and Christopher Persaud in that order. Ramchurejee copped the top spot for juniors with Persaud taking 2nd.
The race started outside the Wales Police Station on the West Bank of Demerara before proceeding to Bushy Park of the East Bank of Essequibo before returning to the Demerara Harbour Bridge for the finish.
The upright and veteran riders turned back at the Uitvlugt Community Centre to finish at the Harbour Bridge.
Dexter Wilson was again unstoppable in the upright category winning ahead of Linden’s Garfield Lorimer and Kester Croal.
The Ancient County’s Gary Benjamin was the top veteran rider, out sprinting Kennard Lovell and Linden Blackman to the line.
Simon won the hog of the sprint prizes taking home five while there was one each for Junior Niles and Robin Persaud.
Members of the Rodrigues family, including wife of the late Regan Rodrigues, former President of the organising club, Carlton Wheelers and The Guyana Cycling Federation, Diane Rodrigues, were on hand to assist with the presentation of prizes. (Franklin Wilson)
