Guyana’s ‘Junior Jaguars’ have booked a place in the quarter-finals of the 2008 Caribbean Football Union under-17 Youth Cup following a hard fought 1-0 win over Barbados in extra time at the Plymouth Recreation Ground in Tobago yesterday.
After the two teams drew 0-0 on Friday in the first match of the 2-game tie, following Grenada, the 3rd team in the group failing to show up, it meant that either team had to win in order to advance to the quarter-finals.
USA based Nicholas Parbhudial netted the winner in the 16th minute of extra time to seal a hard fought victory for Guyana. King Archer received a pass from captain Eon Alleyne and raced towards goal where he fired a shot. The Bajan keeper blocked the shot and the advancing Parbhudial capitalized on the loose ball to slot it into the open goal.
Also featuring in an outstanding performance by the ‘Junior Jaguars’ was goalkeeper Alex Murray who was superb, thwarting many certain goal scoring chances, many of which were one on one.
Marco Marcus was a tower of strength in midfield controlling the game in tandem with Linden Benjamin. Captain Eon Alleyne and Garson Baker, who played central defence, both enjoyed a good game also.
According to team manager Lawrence Griffith, the team did well collectively but Parbhudial had an excellent game using his experience, skill and determination to get around the Barbados defence.
The young Guyanese will leave Tobago for Trinidad tomorrow for their quarter-final game on Wednesday against an opponent yet to be named.
