Embattled Guyana Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) President, Chris Bowman recently revealed that he will not be seeking re–election at the much anticipated Annual General Meeting and Elections in September.
“I will not be seeking re–election; definitely not! I have served two terms and I think its time to take a more developmental role in the sport of basketball,” Bowman told Kaieteur Sport in an interview on Saturday.
Added to the revelation that he is to demit office, Bowman also indicated that the first Sunday in September is outlined as the elections date. He said that this month end is the official due date for the forum.
“It is not a late election by any means. It will be on schedule,” the GABA chief executive observed, while adding that the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall was identified as the venue for the meeting and elections.
Courts Pacesetters Basketball Club had written a letter to the association demanding the staging of the activity. According to the club, the elections were due in July and Bowman’s presidency is currently illegitimate.
Added to that, Bowman had signalled last year, his intention to resign from the office to take up his desire to become a priest. He subsequently reneged on that decision and organised two tournaments to legitimise his campaign.
Before then, the National Sports Commission gave the GABA boss the green light to select Guyana’s national junior team for the Inter–Guiana Games ahead of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation.
Those courses of action among others caused a diversion of support from the body and its president. The Pepsi Sonics Basketball Club championed a ‘no–confidence motion’ last year that fell through because of lack of club support.
“I am outgoing, I will put forward several recommendations at the meeting,” Bowman emphatically told this paper. But whether this is to be believed is still to be proven since Bowman was at similar crossroads before and reneged.
