A Berbice man is optimistic that officers of the police force will soon be able to get to the bottom of how his home got invaded, and at the same time determine the whereabouts of his nephew, from whom he has not heard in three days.
Speaking to this newspaper yesterday, the man, Chetram Persaud, said that he left his Blairmont No.1Settlement home in Berbice a few weeks ago, in order to spend some time with his son at Diamond, on the East Bank of Demerara.
Initially, the man said, his home was left unattended, but his 28-year-old nephew, Shashi Bharrat, had eventually gone to the home with a companion to spend some time there.
However, according to Persaud, it was just after midnight on Thursday last that he got a call from his nephew’s companion, who informed him that his home was broken into and that the intruders had taken his nephew away.
According to Persaud, he told the young woman to inform the Blairmont Police Station immediately, adding that he also telephoned the police station soon afterwards.
The man said that he learnt that the intruders amounted to about five persons – three women and two men. He added that it is believed that one of the women is known to his nephew.
He said he understands that his nephew and the woman had been involved in a relationship which had reportedly gone sour some time ago.
Persaud said it was discovered that the intruders broke down his gate and then the upper front entrance of his two-storey house.
He said that, based on the account of his nephew’s companion, the intruders ransacked the house as if they were searching for something in particular.
And after they left with the young man, checks revealed that they had taken jewellery and cash belonging to the young woman, amounting to just about $60,000.
Persaud said that he is yet to ascertain whether any of his property was taken.
The man said that for the moment he will remain at his son’s residence, even as he speculated as to what could have occurred had he been at the home at the time.
He noted that, while he has no problem with anyone, he prefers to keep his identity anonymous until the police are able to thoroughly investigate the matter and capture the perpetrators.
Efforts to confirm that such an occurrence had transpired in Blairmont were futile, since the responding officer at the Blairmont Police Station claimed that he was not in a position to give out such information.
Meanwhile, Persaud said that he hopes that the matter will not be placed on the ‘back burner,’ noting that he intends to visit the Crime Chief today in order to ensure that justice will be served.
